(More customer reviews)We recently started using this particular mix of Grandma Lucy's for our 18-year-old Gilligan. The last four years have been tough for him (colon obstruction, gall bladder obstruction, liver biopsy, acute and chronic pancreatitis, hepatic encephalopathy, vestibular syndrome, a raging staph infection last summer, and two eye removal surgeries in 14 months...) So obviously we have been battling liver issues for some time now, and after his most recent blood test results we needed to get his diet to be even lower in protein and phosphorus than before. I was baking his chicken every day and adding raw carrots, beets, sprouts, yams, and barley (which had too high level of protein) to the mix, but after being introduced to this product at the local pet food store life has been much easier (and the kitchen cleaner, I might add...) I heat about 1/2 cup of chicken or beef broth, then add about an equal amount of the mix and let sit for five minutes. Meanwhile, I cut up the chicken and also add in some white rice (for carbs, and its protein content is the lowest of all the grains he will eat) and then add in the potato mixture. Gilligan devours it each and every time, and has never once had any digestion issues with his meals since using this. At the urging of our vet, for an EXTREMELY short time we fed him Royal Canin's renal formula, which stunk up the house to high Heaven and almost made me gag while spooning it out onto the plate. Big mistake. Gil always had a tummy ache after he finished eating, seemed agitated and uncomfortable, had trouble sleeping, had diarrhea, and his sinus infection resurfaced in the four days we fed him that disgusting slop. I have done a ton of research on commercial dog food in the last three years, and knew in my better judgment that regardless of what his doctor said, the canned prescription food being recommended by veterinarians is not quality food regardless of how optimal the levels of protein, copper, phosphorus, etc. (do some research on what the AAFCO allows in pet food and you will be appalled.) I myself tasted the Grandma Lucy's mixture the first time I made it after it had sit for five minutes, and it IS delicious! There is nothing in it that humans wouldn't eat. The ingredients are as follows: Potatoes, flax, sweet potatoes, carrots, celery, apples, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, garlic, rosemary, vitamin A, vitamin D3, vitamin E, niacin, iron, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, riboflavin, thiamin, potassium, manganese, chloride, copper, magnesium, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12 family.) It tastes like instant mashed potatoes with a ton of herbs and seasonings added, and the garlic makes it (and my kitchen) smell wonderful. Gilligan's coat has definitely gotten shinier and more healthy looking, his seizures have stopped and his sinus infection went away, he is sleeping more soundly, and he seems to think his meals are yummy. At 18 years old, with no eyes and having suffered lots o' health issues, that's about all I can ask for and I'm thankful for it. Thanks Grandma Lucy!
